Regarding The Snapping Turtle

By Larry Ivey

Snapping turtles are very dangerous. This is not a
beginner pet. Nor should this be a pet for a child. You
need to have good working knowledge of the nature of these
turtles. Mis-handling could cause a person to lose a
finger or hand; depending on the size of the turtle.

Never try to pick up one by its shell or at the center of
the body. It is capable of stretching its head half the
length of its body and severly biting you. Try to get hold
of the upper part of its tail while holding the turtle away
from your body.

They should be kept in a large container, like a stong
plastic pool. A 300 gallon size pool or tub is adequate.
They need the room for exercise, or they won't eat properly.
Try to have it located in an area that gets sun, with some
shade. If there is no natural shade, you should place
something over the area to provide some cool shade.

They do not tolerate any other type of turtle in their
pool. Other turtles are subject to being eaten. And,
speaking of eating, they are carnivors. You can buy cut up
chickens at the super market. Chop it up and just throw it
in the pool. Anything that gets in the pool can be a
potential meal. They will take anything: birds, mice,
rats, snakes, etc.

You also need to check with your state, because some states
require that you have a special permit. Failing to do so
prior to getting one of these dangerous turtles could bring
you trouble with your state laws.

I LOVE this hub and PLEASE remind me to tell you my own experience(s) with them...I have several that you will probably just love - might not believe but I assure you they are 100% TRUE!!

As a child, I have even eaten them. Cook in slow oven all day, pork shake-and-bake is good.

The hard part is cleaning them. Watching my father do it was pretty wild, what a talent!

Where we lived these turtles were EVERYTHERE. always eating the fish off the stringers...roaming around on shore...

I even caught 2 MATING! Now THAT was a sight!!!

Theres more...

Good hub! Great picks!

This article is full of misinformation. (1) Snapping turtles do NOT make good pets for anyone. They are wild animals and are meant to live in the wild. Anyone desiring to keep them as pets does not have the best interest of the turtle in mind. (2) Picking up a snapper by the tail can dislocate its spine. The Toronto Zoo has a great video illustrating how to move a snapping turtle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lgd_B6iKPxU
